The classic DS-1 Distortion pedal provides a harder distortion effect for guitar and keyboard sounds. Instead of toneless, fuzzy distortion, the DS-1 faithfully reproduces all the subtle nuances of playing dynamics--at any volume.

The DS-1 is a pretty good distortion. You can get some pretty good tones from it, from warm classic distortion to Nirvana, or some pretty ridiculously biting tones with the tone dimed. Not bad for a medium/heavy distortion. Now here's the problem with it. 1. it doesn't play well with others. Any other distortions used with it will tend to be overtaken, because the DS-1 is so "squashed". 2. When the tone knob goes up, any bass/mids begin to disappear. This isn't bad if you want bite, but it does result in pretty thin sounds. A third thing to note, while not necessarily a problem, is that a boost will boost it significantly more than most other pedals- this is a problem when you have multiple distortions and one boost. I find that I have to use my volume pedal to control this with the boost on, which works, but is a bit of a hassle... Obviously, it's a BOSS, so the build quality is great. All in all, not a bad pedal.

The DS-1 is not a bad sounding pedal. But I found out that it sounds better when it is the only pedal on in the pedalboard.
The DS-1 tone takes over any overdrive pedal in the chain.
I agree with the other review that says it colors the tone on tube amps, but I never ran it into a solid state to tell de difference.
The tone is not a natural valve distorion, it sounds more metalic, with buzz.
The DS-1 let's you nail the Nirvana tones when used through a tube amp.
It's usefull for punk rock and metal too.
One thing I find weird is that it seems to have a interaction between the Tone and Level knobs, just like when you turn down the tone, you may loose volume and need to raise the level.
So, if you want to play Nirvana, or seek Kurt Cobain tones, hard punk rock distortions tones, you will like it.

It's a tried and true old standby. I don't reccomend it for tube amps. Too much color to the tone and it really makes it difficult to get a uniform sound all across the tonal spectrum. For solid state amps (like most boss pedals are designed for) it's good. It doesn't interfere with much.
